the Amsterdam Tattoo Museum
Hanky Panky is a true tattoo legend. I first read about him in a book called Modern Primitives when I was about 15 years old. Henk's interview in the book explained how he had traveled around the world, collecting tattoos, exploring different indigenous tribes lands, and collecting strange and wonderful artifacts. Not to mention he was (is) a bad ass motherfucker. From then on, I knew I wanted to be like Henk ;). Before my current career, I worked in a very reputable tattoo shop for the better part of a decade. I have been fascinated by tattoos since I was a small child and even though I no longer work in the industry, I have continued to tattoo my body. Although you wouldn't know it from the photos on this blog, I currently have over 300 hours of tattoo work on me and I'm slowly getting to the point where I am running out of room! Henk's tattoo museum was an awesome experience, especially for a serious collector or artist. It is located a little far away from the other major sites in Amsterdam, but you can easily hop a canal boat to his stop (get off at the Tropenmuseum). The collection of unique artifacts is excellent! Some of my favorite things included a severed Yakuza's finger, shrunken heads, and a great collection of machines. This is a "must do" for any artist or serious collector!
